Kelham Island Wedding - Sheffield - Hannah & Matt

Posted on 18th September 2022 by Mark Tierney

Good lighting is an important factor at any wedding, and at this Humanist ceremony, which saw Hannah and Matt exchange their vows at the Kelham Island Museum, we had it in abundance! The skies were a perfect, cloudless, shade of blue, the sun streamed in through the venue windows, and later in the evening, the neon signs scattered around both inside and outside the venue gave the night a celebratory party vibe. It was a beautiful day, both for its touching ceremony, and its summer sunshine!

It’s no exaggeration to say this was a marriage event that had been hotly anticipated for years. The couple had booked two dates previously that were cancelled due to Covid, then a third was postponed when Hannah became pregnant with little Jake. I’m sure when Jake’s older, and sees the photos of himself as a baby at his parents’ special day, he’ll be happy his mum and dad waited for his arrival!

The day was a haze of pinks and yellows, featured a joyful ceremony, and an exciting reception, complete with meaningful toasts served in shot cups during the speeches. After the ceremony,  I took the newlyweds outside for some bride and groom portraits, before concentrating on more formal, staged photos of family, and reportage shots of friends. I did the same again later on, when the light outside began to fade.

The Kelham Island Museum is absolutely one of my favourite urban venues; not just because of its light and airy interior, but also because of its colourful exterior walls, and cobbled streets. The enormous industrial installations, combined with the light gave the wedding photos an original, almost sci-fi, feel, which I thought captured the exciting, modern, and romantic atmosphere of the occasion. Some great memories were made during this marriage, and I’d like to wish Hannah and Matt (and Jake) all the best in their future together.
