Honley Show Ground Wedding - Rose & Fred

Posted on 11th January 2026 by Mark Tierney

Rose & Fred’s DIY wedding near Holmfirth was proof that you don’t need perfect weather to have an incredible wedding day. Set high on a hill in the Yorkshire countryside, their marquee celebration was met with relentless rain — but inside it was warm, colourful, and full of laughter from start to finish.

One of the best moments of the day was their arrival: Rose and Fred turned up in their campervan, pulling into the field through the drizzle like it was the most normal (and brilliant) way to arrive at your wedding. It immediately set the tone — relaxed, personal, and completely them.

Rather than a strict theme, Rose had a clear floral vision: soft pastels, whites, creams and coral, with bold accents of amethyst, scarlet, orange and blue. The flowers were grown by her parents on their allotments, keeping everything seasonal and meaningful — even with a hosepipe ban that meant they had to stay flexible depending on what was ready. They also grew some blooms specially for the wedding, including Ammi majus and Cosmos ‘Xanthos’. Airy umbels, wild herbs and flowers like fennel, wild carrot and oregano were paired with richer choices like burgundy and scarlet dahlias and scabious, plus pops of cornflowers and Nigella (Love in a Mist).

The personal touches carried through the décor too. Hanging dried flowers were repurposed from displays at Rose’s work — she’s a horticulturist for the Royal Horticultural Society at Wisley — and the bunting was handmade by Fred’s mum, Simi, inspired by prayer flags from their travels in Nepal. The jewel colours and Indian block prints tied in perfectly with the Asian feast later on.

Even with rain drumming on the marquee roof, the ceremony felt intimate and heartfelt, with the misty hills beyond making a dramatic backdrop. The confetti was chaotic in the best way, the speeches had everyone laughing and tearing up, and by the evening the weather didn’t matter at all — it was just a brilliant hilltop party under canvas.

Rose and Fred, thank you for having me along to capture it all. What a day — and what a way to do a wedding!
