Sheffield Town Hall & Kelham Island Museum - Steph & Matt

Posted on 11th February 2019 by Mark Tierney

Steph and Matt’s Kelham Island wedding wasn’t just dramatic for the bride and groom. This humble wedding photographer made the national news when the lift I was travelling in broke down, on one of the hottest days of the year! Yes, the South Yorkshire Fire department were duly called to come to my rescue, but luckily my dilemma didn’t distract from the fun of the big day.

Firstly, I need to say, that the wedding details were impressive, largely due to Steph having made the room decorations by hand, as well as the bouquets. Styled in pink and silver, the flowers in the bride’s bouquet were crafted from silk, while those of the bridesmaids used fresh blooms. The venue, with its miles of bunting, and hands-on rustic pizza-making tent, was a perfect choice, fitting the vibe of the day exactly.

The bridal party was collected by vintage car and taken to the ceremony venue. It was so warm, electric fans were strategically placed and many of the guests took hand held fans too. Following their big, cinematic kiss to seal the deal as husband and wife, we took a few shots outside. These photos included both bride and groom portraits and posed family pics, and then several more inside, around the Kelham Island museum.

The cake table groaned under the weight of so many delicious offerings and Steph and Matt lit up the atmosphere with their very touching speeches. A disco followed, which bathed the long reception room in bright pink and green light.

After their first dance, I managed to steal the newlyweds away for some more photos on their own. Walls of fluorescent lights made for a great backdrop, as did the bridge outside. It was a very eventful wedding and one that will stick in my mind for all the right reasons, as well as my minor ordeal. I was very glad to escape the oven-like heat of the lift, but it was the way in which Steph and Matt smiled at one another and obviously treasured the company of their family and friends, that made the day truly special for me. Wishing them all the very best!
